Dale Vander Linden

Dale Vander Linden (81) still makes pencils, despite his advanced age. He's been creating pencils for more than 60 year and was even a US Navy veteran during World War II. Vander Linden was survived by his wife Cherry, his sons Stephen (and JoAnne) and brother Pete. His parents Guy and Katie Vander Linden and his brothers Ern and Don preceded him in death.

While carving his Santa Claus, Dale Vander Linden often uses rolling pins and pencils to create the Santa. He spends the days before Christmas carving Santa Claus from pencils, and other materials. He prefers to use a rolling pin to carve Santa Claus, even though many people would love to have a carver’s toolkit.

Wood carving techniques

There are many wood carving techniques available that can be used to create your own pencils. One of the easiest techniques is to use natural oils to finish the wood carvings. These oils protect the wood form from dirt and moisture. Gloss varnish is not recommended as it can create a shiny, distorted surface which will confuse the observer. A second technique is to use wax. This gives pencils a soft and lustrous sheen. This is best for indoor carvings.

You should choose the wood type according to what type of carving you are planning to do. Select a wood that has a small figure and fine grain for intricate carving. Strong figures can make it difficult to see fine detail. You have now chosen the wood. Next is choosing the right tools. Safety goggles and Kevlar safety gloves will be required. These will protect you from any wood chips and make sure that your hands don't scratch the wood.

Sanding the edges and ends of whittling crayons

Wood carving is a common form of decoration. This method typically involves carving a wooden plaque or tablet. Sanding the edges of these pencils can improve the look and feel of the finished product. These pencils can be used for any purpose, no matter what. To achieve a smooth and sharp surface, you must first sand the edges of these pencils.

Begin by creating divots within the graphite core. You can use a number-2 pencil for the marks after you've made those divots. Make sure to use sandpaper that is lighter than the mark before you stop. After the carving process, you can apply hot-melt glue to the pencil tip and re-carve it.

How to join wooden boards without using nails

Woodworking is a popular hobby. It is relaxing and enjoyable because you can create something useful with wood. Sometimes you may want to join two pieces together of wood without using nails. This article will demonstrate how to do so to preserve the beauty of your woodwork.

Before joining the pieces of wood together, you will need to first trim any edges. Do not leave any sharp corners as they could cause problems down in the future. Now it's time to start glueing your boards together.

If you are working on hardwood, you should only use glue on one side. If you're using softwoods like pine or cedar, you should put glue on both sides. Apply the glue to the boards and press them down until they are securely attached. Before you proceed to the next step, be sure to let the glue dry completely.

After you have glued the boards together, drill holes in the joints where you intend to place screws. The size of these holes depends on what type of screw you choose to use. If you plan to use a 1/2 inch wood screw, drill a hole at least 3/4 inches in depth.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. You should be careful not to touch the board's front surface. This could cause damage. Try to not hit the ends of the screws when driving the screws. This will prevent the wood from splitting.

Now that your project is finished, you'll want to protect it from the elements. You have two options: seal the whole furniture piece or just the top. You will want to choose a product that will be durable for many years. You can choose from oil-based varnishes or polyurethane, shellac and lacquer as examples.

These products can be found in most home improvement shops. You should make sure you are getting the right type for the job. Keep in mind that certain finishes can be toxic and should not be used indoors. When handling certain finishes, wear protective gear.
